Introducing the Jolicloud alpha release!

by Jolicloud Team

June 2nd, 2009

Since we first announced the Jolicloud project, we have received a lot of requests from people around the world who wanted to get involved and try the product.

Building an Internet operating system is quite a big task as you imagine.

At Jolicloud, we are focused on providing the best experience possible for the user. For that we are using the best technology available from the open source and free software community, but also from the Open Web.

In a couple of days, we will start sending invitations for the alpha program. As it is just the beginning, we are still fixing some bugs and adjusting our servers, so it may take a bit of time before you get your own invitation.

In this introduction post, we wanted to thank all the projects that made Jolicloud possible:

We also wanted to thank everyone for their support. Since yesterday’s TechCrunch story, we have received a lot of amazing feedback. We know that you are as much excited to try out the new alpha as we are happy to unleash our work.

Here is below the Jolicloud badge that you can put on your website or blog:

Don’t worry, everyone who did register will receive shortly an invitation in the order that they subscribed! As we are moving to our production infrastructure, we will make sure at first that we get a great quality of service before starting inviting more people.

This blog will be with our Twitter (@jolicloud) our main way to communicate news. For the support, we have setup a GetSatisfaction, and for real-time support, we have set up a dedicated Twitter: @jolisupport.

hi – any plans to expand it beyond just netbooks?

This concept would be perfect for older/underpowered laptops as well, breathing new life into them!

Since this OS seems to be Ubuntu-based, I’m betting my Thinkpad T41 (which runs Ubuntu really well) would do great with this. Just curious if there are any plans for this yet.

Thanks! And you guys have a great looking concept so far.

Hi i am truly looking forward to trying this OS, looks very interesting. I have one question, will installation of applications be as easy as installing one on OSX or windows? Or will coding skills be required as is the case in linux?

Animuz, the Acer Aspire One should work out of the box. Ubuntu distributions (Jolicloud is one) will automatically recognize the internal modem and prompt you to select the appropriate region and carrier. If this doesn’t work right away, you should be able to find support online or contact your carrier for the number to dial and username & password, if needed. With AT&T, for instance, you only need to set up the dialup phone number as *99***1# with no username or password.

Robby, newer Linux distributions require very little technical knowledge and installing applications is easier than in Windows or OS X. You just go to the program install window and search for the app you want to install.

Am really looking forward to trying this OS.

Is there any indication on how quickly the invites are going out? I only heard about this (and applied for an invite) a few days ago, but would really like to get it on my netbook before I head off on a trip in a couple of weeks ;)

Bob, I’ve been waiting for an invite, and I applied months ago, so it seems like the invites are not going out quickly yet.

Shameful… cloud computing is locking up user personal data onto machines that belong to corporations.

Instead of advancing toward the future, you’re bringing us back to centralized/company owned network topologies.

As a remainder, the Internet started and was successful by leaving the computational power and the data storage into the leaves of the network.

Shameful and backward, sorry…

Beniz, I think you are missing the huge potential of the internet to liberate data from single systems. By storing data on the internet we free it up to be used anywhere at any time on robust, cheap client systems. Cloud computing doesn’t limit users to a centalized server but rather frees users to leverage the totality of the internet to work for them. Companies like Google will always have better, more secure, more redundant and more powerful storage and processing power than I can afford; it makes sense to use the best services available. Why cripple ourselves by isolating our activities to one computer?

@beniz, appollo is right, this is an opportunity to build a new open cloud architecture and let the user be aware of where, how and when he wants his data. We won’t force people into services but rather guide them to explore the potentialities of the cloud.

Hi, just wondering if you could post some information about the alpha invite. I’ve been waiting for a few weeks now for an invite, so I was just wondering if the alpha is closed, or if I can look forward to eventually receiving one. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the eventual release.

Hello.
I have installed your operating system. I take 2 weeks. It is like the friendly interface.
Today, the utility has stopped working “main menu”. Missing part of the folders on your desktop with links to installation. Still have a folder “administration” and “options”. The program “main menu” will not start. Perhaps it happened as a result of my actions are not correct.
Help to restore the “main menu”. Which means it can be done.
Thanks in advance.

Hi folks, – uncovered your blog inadvertently while roaming across the internet this morning, and glad that I did! I like the design and tones, but I really should point out that I’m having problems whenever it loads. I’m using chrome internet browser, and the menu bit wouldn’t line up nicely. Seems OK in WannaBe 2 though.

What i do not understood is in fact how you are no longer actually a lot more well-preferred than you might be right now. You’re very intelligent. You realize thus considerably on the subject of this matter, made me in my opinion consider it from a lot of various angles. Its like women and men don’t seem to be interested except it?s one thing to accomplish with Girl gaga! Your individual stuffs excellent. All the time take care of it up!king regards Tom
